Loss

Tonight I answered the door to find my brother standing there unexpectedly as he should have been at work still.

He very slowly told me that my grandmother had passed away this evening.

The news did shock me a bit as she was apparently doing better earlier this evening.  For those who do not know my grandmother, she has been suffering from chronic drug dependency which over time worsened.  I had always urged my family to get her the help she needed.  It never happened.

A little bit of a background may be in order.  I lived with my grandparents from birth till I was around 15, I had daily interactions with my parents but I truly lived with my grandparents.  She was my an incredibly good listener, and she valued me above perhaps all others besides her husband (who passed away a few years ago).  She was an amazing woman who greeted everyone at the door with an invitation for a home cooked meal, stories, gossip, and general conversation.  She worked in every way to protect everyone from all harm.  A great woman the likes of which I have yet to see an equal.

I will miss the endless walks with her, the conversation, her advice, her concern, and her charity.  The world is a bit darker without her.

Conversely I hold great malice towards her caregiver who aptly sat in the same room with her as she expired without any help.  I have a very deep suspicion that he not only failed to provide assistance but perhaps hastened her passing.  Unfortunately my family declined for an autopsy.

I am glad my grandmother is beyond the suffering of her frailty, she has many sights to see with eyes of new and I am confident that our paths will cross once again.

I miss her much, always will, the world has lost something truly special.
