Me and my wife went yesterday into the woods looking for what the locals call “hickory chickens” which is actually a mushroom (Morchella esculenta).  These are highly prized and very pricey mushrooms.  Needless to say we did not find any 🙁

But we did find another local delicacy which locals call “Poke Sallet” which is actually (Phytolacca americana) or poke plant. It sorta tastes of asparagus.

I’ve heard of “chicken mushrooms” before. I wonder if that’s the same thing? I’ve found and cooked them. And the nice white puffballs, too. Mmm. Shroomy goodness.
