Repairing Browser Search Prefixes

Infrequently I have chosen to allow an activeX module to install in my browser, only to find they are trojan programs that often include browser hijackers.  Well this is no problem for me because I know how to remove them manually and move on.  But one of the things these hijackers do is disable any browser search prefixes that you may have.  Myself I have quite a few, such as:

typing GOOGLE and what I wanna search on google for, example: GOOGLE tennis balls

I also have these for ebay, imdb, lj userinfo, lj communities, lj users, etc…

When these search prefixes do not work I get annoyed fast.

So here is a tip for restoring your browser search prefixes.

Open regedit

browse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks

you will see this entry:
_{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

change to

{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}
