Photography

You know in today’s age everyone with a camera fancies themselves as a photographer. My wife recently hosted a free photography class for kids aged 5 thru 17. The amazing bits to me was that some of the younger children produced the superior photographs to their older peers. Some of these kids really have a good eye for photography, something which I hope their parents will encourage in life. Here are kids with zero exposure to photography and yielding results that are to me comparable to the “quasi-professional” or dedicated hobbyist who have been at it for 8+ years.

My wife has collaborated with a really good photographer from Florida, the man is amazing, he is in his 70’s and does these beautiful prints in palladium, and platinum instead of the usual silver. The old guy told my wife that no matter the level of education, no matter how many books you read, it all falls down to “the eye”. I think he is quite right on this, some people strive to be a good photographer, they buy every fancy piece of equipment they can, and shoot constantly, yet yield mediocre to bland uninteresting drivel. They lack “the Eye” for photography, they simply don’t have the ability to use the camera as a tool to achieve the idea that’s in their head, or they can’t use the camera to create something spontaneous and beautiful. Anyone can pick up a chisel, but that does not mean they can produce exquisite sculptures.

Something I simply find annoying are photographers that shoot 1000+ photographs in a session with a model, choose just a single photograph (presumably their best), post it, and it be an absolutely pathetic shot. How is that possible, how can someone stink so horrendously that out of 1,000+ shots not a single one excels. How can that person even consider themselves a good photographer. That is really such a dismal success rate. Can you imagine any photographer say 80 years ago trying to make a career with those odds. Hell you would need a boxcar worth of film to yield a single photo worthy of even showing. And to compound the whole situation, most of these shit photographers are working in a studio, where they can control things like lighting and compositional elements. They are in control of all this and yet yield crap!

Pathetic indeed.

Years pass and the same people posting drivel are if anything getting worse, they buy more and more equipment, and shoot more and more photos, and their work suffers even more.

You know it’s bad stuff when a photographer shoots the same model over and over and each shot, the model appears worse and worse.

Now, back to the old photographer who I think has talent, his stuff can be viewed here.

I love taking pictures, especially at the zoos I work at. I get opportunities that most people don’t. Some of my pictures I think turn out really nice. But I don’t fancy myself a “photographer”. And I’m lost with real cameras- I don’t know anything about how to use a real 35 mm. So I stick with my easy to use and edit digital.

I use a digital camera myself.

I am really mostly pissed off with the arrogant and quite untalented works I see posted in the artinnudity community. They have someone there who fancies himself a great photographer and the guy always overexposes photos horrendously, losing all skin tones and yet thinks his SHIT is right up there with say playboy.

I am like you, I love shooting zoos. My zoo shots are well snapshots, I love them dearly. But I would not post my zoo shots in an art community because they are well just snapshots, just my way of documenting what I saw that day :).
