Routers & Firmware
I read day before yesterday of a new firmware to replace the existing one for my Linksys WRT54g router.
One of the bugs I noticed about the Linksys router was it hated when the network had more than 200 connections and would sometimes stop responding. Also there is a uPnP problem with the router as well.
So yesterday I flashed the router’s firmware to DD-WRT and was amazed at all the settings that are now present. One of the settings was to control the routers wireless transmission power, I think normally it is set around 50mW with the Linksys firmware, but with the DD-WRT you can set it up to 251mW. But if one did shift up to that high of wattage one should use some kind of cooling assistance to the router to prevent it from overheating. Plus there is some side effects of having a router bumped up to 251mW, such as signal deflection (reflection) and the signal bleeding over into other 2.4ghz channels.
But if someone has a Linksys router (including the buggy WRT54G v5), they would probably benefit from the DD-WRT firwmare. Just one should be careful and follow good instructions on flashing or they could turn their router into a brick.
